World series 5 game highlights
Ryan Pressly will have to get five high-stress outs to close it out. It’s worth remembering that Pressly threw 19 pitches in a five-run game and faced Brandon Marsh, Kyle Schwarber and Rhys Hoskins, three hitters who will get another look at him. If it wasn’t a no-hitter, would Dusty Baker have felt compelled to use him in Game 4?
Okay so, the game us 7-7. The ball has been flying off of the bats all night long, and neither bullpen seems to be able to completely lock things down. So, for some reason, the Dodgers’ cleanup hitter Kiké Hernandez just bunted to try to move Turner from second to third base, but his bunt ends up getting Turner out at third… so the Dodgers gave up an out and lost their lead runner in the process.
Maeda is still in the game for the Dodgers, even though he gave up a three-run dinger and the left-handed Gattis is now up. He was not in for very long, however: after retiring Reddick and walking Gattis, in comes Tony Watson to replace Maeda. He’ll face Marwin Gonzalez and Brian McCann, and if one of them reaches, George Springer is up for the fourth time tonight.
Cole didn’t allow a hit until Kiké Hernández singled leading off the fifth. Judge, who an inning earlier made a leaping catch at the left-center wall to deny Freeman an extra-base hit, dropped Tommy Edman’s fly to center. Volpe then bounced a throw to third on Will Smith’s grounder, allowing the Dodgers to load the bases with no outs.
Freeman is now one home run away from tying the record for the most homers by a player in a single World Series. There have been three players who recorded five homers in a single World Series, with Reggie Jackson first doing so in the Yankees’ 1977 World Series triumph over the Dodgers.
2001 world series 7 game
Although the Diamondbacks were only one game above .500 by the end of April, Gonzalez had a particularly memorable start to the season, in which he tied the MLB record with 13 home runs during the month of April. The Diamondbacks found greater success in May and June, and at one point had a six-game lead in the NL West. During this span, the team won nine consecutive games, and Johnson tied the MLB record with 20 strikeouts in a nine-inning game. The six game lead did not last long however, and by the end of July, the Diamondbacks were a half game behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the West. A resurgent August pushed the team back into first place, a spot they maintained for the rest of the season. By the end of the season, several Diamondbacks players had put up exceptional statistics: Curt Schilling had the most wins of any pitcher in MLB that year with 22, while Johnson nearly broke the single season strikeout record with 372. Johnson and Schilling also had the two lowest earned run averages (ERA) in the NL, with 2.49 and 2.98 respectively. Gonzalez ended the season with a .325 batting average and 57 home runs, and finished third in voting for the NL Most Valuable Player Award. The Diamondbacks were also one of the best defensive teams in MLB that year, second in fewest errors committed, and tied with the Seattle Mariners for the best fielding percentage.
But Gonzo, who hit .325 with 57 home runs in his magical regular season, had been struggling all World Series, with 11 strikeouts in 24 at-bats. He had hit a two-run homer in Game 1 but had been unable to pull anything with any authority, hitting a lot of foul balls down the third-base line and missing a lot of pitches.
From 2002 through 2007, the Yankees’ misfortune in the postseason continued, with the team losing the ALDS to the Anaheim Angels in 2002, the World Series to the Florida Marlins in 2003, the ALCS to the Boston Red Sox (in the process becoming the first team in postseason history to blow a 3–0 series lead) in 2004, the ALDS again to the Angels in 2005, and then losing the ALDS to the Detroit Tigers and the Cleveland Indians in 2006 and 2007, respectively. In addition, including the World Series loss in 2001, every World Series champion from 2001 to 2004 won the title at the Yankees’ expense in postseason play, which is an AL record and as of 2023 tied for the MLB record with the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2016 to 2019. Joe Torre’s contract was allowed to expire and he was replaced by Joe Girardi in 2008, a season in which the Yankees would miss the playoffs for the first time since 1993. The Yankees won their 27th World Series championship in 2009, defeating the defending 2008 champion Philadelphia Phillies in six games, but could not pull off another dynasty like they did during the late 1990s and early 2000s; in fact, they failed to reach the World Series during the entirety of the 2010s.
Midway through Game 1 it was difficult to tell who were the three time defending champions and which was the franchise making it’s Classic debut. Arizona ace Curt Schilling continued his remarkable postseason with seven superb innings and Luis Gonzalez homered, drove in two runs and scored twice as the Diamondbacks stunned the Yanks, 9-1. Taking advantage of a rough start by New York’s Mike Mussina and some sloppy defense, the Diamondbacks seized the opening advantage that resulted in titles nearly 60 percent of the time. Nothing changed the following day as Randy Johnson tossed a three hitter and Matt Williams added a three run homer in the seventh for 4-0 victory. The Big Unit was dominant from the start, allowing just a walk and a single over the first seven innings. He struck out eleven and improved to 3-1 in the postseason. In his last three outings, he allowed just two runs and thirteen hits in twenty-five innings.
